Quality - It’s not just a promise
August 30, 2007 at 2:26 pm | In Behind the Scenes, G.W. Visser & Sons | No CommentsLast time I showed you a picture of a couple guys looking at a high tech device called a Smart Spud. Behind them was a machine for grading potatoes that used a lot of steel where potatoes can easily get bruised. This time I’ll tell you about some new equipment that one of FoodTrust’s partners is using to hopefully eliminate much of the bruising that happens during grading.
William and Randy Visser (G.W. Visser and Sons) were one of FoodTrust’s first packing partners. They really understand quality. They also know the importance of continually striving to improve quality. When we approached them about partnering on purchasing some new equipment they jumped at the chance.
This new equipment from Grimme, a company in Belgium, is specially designed to minimize impacts to potatoes. The belts are made of rubber and anything that can come into contact with a potato is made to reduce the effect of impact. The equipment shown on the left allows sorting and grading of up to three products.
On the right is a tote box filler. The box, sitting beside the machine, is placed under a chute. The potatoes feed from the first machine onto this one. The chute lowers to reduce the distance a potato must drop into the box. It automatically rises as the box fills up.
As far as we can tell this equipment is the first of its kind in this region. Once it proves itself I’m sure other farms will start using similar equipment. But, it is just one example of how FoodTrust and its partners are on the forefront of technology.
I’ll try to get pictures or video of this equipment in action for a future update.

Fluffy Whipped Mashed Potatoes
August 29, 2007 at 10:47 am | In Behind the Scenes, Our Food, Solutions | No Comments
Ok, you come home from work and your family wants fluffy mashed potatoes to go with supper. “Ugh!” you say, “They take so long, and I have to mash AND whip them <sigh>.”
The next time you’re in this situation, all you have to do is stop by your local A&P or Metro store on your way home from work and pick up a package of FoodTrust Home Style Mashed Potatoes. Then when you get home you just microwave it for 3 minutes you’ve got a delicious accompaniment for any meal.
What makes these FoodTrust potatoes different from other packaged potatoes? Well, the staff at FoodTrust spent two years researching which potato is right for each cooking method. Once we knew which potato makes the best mashed potatoes, we started working on developing the best process to produce a fully cooked mashed potato. We wanted to develop a fresh and wholesome product that we would be proud to serve our own families.
We also wanted to use fresh, all natural, ingredients. One of our goals was to produce mashed potatoes that had no preservatives.
It took a great deal of effort, but the result is well worth it. Our home style fully cooked mashed potatoes are produced in small batches using only natural ingredients (potatoes, milk, cream, butter, and salt), and as one customer recently told us “my family finally says I got mashed potatoes right!”
Next time, fresh peeled potatoes.

August 28, 2007 at 9:12 am | In Behind the Scenes, Our Food, Solutions | No CommentsAre you late arriving home from work? Do you have something planned for later in the evening? Do you need to pull together a healthy meal for your family in a hurry?
The folks here at FoodTrust are working on solutions to help calm your hectic life. Our new line of pre-cooked potatoes is just the thing to help you provide convenient, quick, and healthy meals for your family.
These potatoes are taken directly from the warehouse, cut, and cooked quickly so they are the freshest they can possibly be. There are no preservatives that might be of concern to you or your family. For example, the ingredients list for pour Home-Style Mashed potatoes is simply “PEI potatoes, milk, butter, cream, and salt”. By the way, your family will love them!
In this series I will tell you a little more about each offering in our fully-cooked line and perhaps give some hints for how they can make your life easier.
